The next 9th August, hundreds of people will once again join together on the Murcian coast to participate in a symbolic action that has been gaining strength year after year: the Embrace the Mar MenorThis collective, peaceful and emotion-filled event aims to demand the protection and recovery of the Mar Menor, the largest salt lake in Europe, severely affected by pollution and environmental degradation. Organized by citizen groups and supported by various environmental platforms, the Embrace the Mar Menorseeks to highlight the urgent need to act responsibly and with commitment to this unique ecosystem. The event will be held at various points along the coast, including Los Alcazares, where massive participation is expected.
A symbolic gesture that unites thousands
He Embrace the Mar Menor It consists of forming a large human chain around the lagoon, with people holding hands along the shore. The goal is to create a symbolic "hug" that expresses the affection, concern, and unity of citizens with this endangered natural gem. Year after year, the event has gained notoriety as one of the most representative environmental events in the Region of Murcia. Residents, visitors, families, associations, schools, and people of all ages and backgrounds participate, all with the same message: “The Mar Menor needs protection, and it needs it now.”.
Why is it important?
For decades, the Mar Menor has suffered the consequences of an unsustainable development model: agricultural waste, massive urbanization, overexploitation of aquifers, and lack of management have led to the ecological collapse of its waters. Episodes of fish kills, loss of biodiversity, and the disappearance of seagrass meadows are clear symptoms of an ecosystem at its limit. Actions such as the Embrace the Mar Menor are vital not only for making the problem visible, but also for generate social and political pressure, demanding transparent, scientific and sustainable management of the natural environment.
